As a teenager wanting to create my own style, sewing was my go to. Creating items of clothing using commercial patterns was an obvious choice and I was lucky to have the help and encouragement of my mum, as well as the use of her sewing machine and tools.

Inevitably I began experimenting with ways of altering the pattern to create a more individual and personal feel. Fascinated with the technique and complexities of translating a design into a physical pattern block: rather like a technical drawing showing the relationship or order of assembly of parts and components, I wanted to learn more.

Eventually in adulthood I was lucky enough to spend 5 years studying pattern drafting for fashion. I learnt how to take proper measurements to build a pattern and how to apply pattern making principles such as darts and fullness. Equally important is the selection of material to create the desired fit as well as the theory of colour to complement and enhance the silhouette.

Understanding fibre content, texture and weight play a major part in ensuring the right fabric choice. I found my inspiration when selecting fabrics, pattern and colour, mixing and matching, creating harmony or contrast and evoking feelings or perceptions. And so My Love Affair with Textiles and Colour began.

I returned to studying, this time a 6 year City and Guilds Course in Creative Textiles. My relationship with textiles evolved, the skills I learnt enabled me to put an individual slant on my designs. Through the application of new techniques and methods I was able to look beyond the obvious and find something else along the way.

As a lover of the vibrant colours found in the natural world I constantly look for ideas from my surroundings. I am never without my camera to capture the beauty I see, and as my ability to translate these images and the images in my mind’s eye into a design on paper grew I felt a shift away from designing clothing to accessories, more importantly handbags.

The internet and social media has opened up a new world for me. Ultimately my desire is to share everything I create with those who appreciate it. To do so requires a knowledge of technology, a challenge which pushes me outside my comfort zone but is also very rewarding.

Thank you for taking time to read about my journey

I am always happy to hear from you.
