The Tree of Life - Wet and Dry/Needle Felting

Designing the Tree of Life Panel

1. Design Sketched and Coloured using Acrylic.

2. Individual Panels produced using Felting and Stitchery.

3. Flower Head detail added.

4. The Tree of Life.


Dry/Needle Felting

Commercial wool felt in two contrasting colours. Needle felted thread scraps and wool scraps which have been shaped like slips.

Strips cut from wet felting panels. These strips single needle felted to dry felting panel. The blue felt cut back to reveal the cerise below. The top and bottom Kanta stitched.


Wet Felting 

Five layers of wool roving in tonal colours. Double sided with one side using four tonal shades and the other showing two. Patches of wool roving needle felted to the side with two colours.


Wet Felting 

Five layers consisting of cerise wool roving and sheep’s fleece, topped with scraps of thread. Kanta stitching to create slip shapes and then needle felted.


Wet Felting and Dry/Needle Felting 

Tapering shapes cut from panels. These shapes stitched together with forward facing seams.

The remaining shapes joined together with a patch of knitting which is needle felted to the shapes.


Wet Felting 

Four layers of wool roving in analogous colours. Double sided with one side vertical and the other horizontal. Triangles cut, one edge with scalloped scissors. Hand insertion stitches used to connect four shapes.
