Layering a Design

Updated: May 6, 2024

Drawing and Sketching - Transparent objects arranged for the purpose of creating drawings. A drawing of the objects plus the details within the objects using pencil on 80gms paper.

Rubbing Board - Wire bent and moulded into the shapes of the drawn objects. Wire shapes stitched in place at intervals in order to produce a stable ground for taking rubbings.

Frottage Rubbings - The technique of obtaining an impression of the surface texture of a material, such as wire, by placing a piece of fabric or paper over it and rubbing it with a soft pencil or crayon, as for taking rubbings; the name is also applied to the impression obtained. The rubbings taken are on dyed fabric and painted tissue.

Layering the Design - Scraps of dyed fabric and painted tissue paper glued, using diluted wall paper paste, to a ground of calico approximately A4 in size. Added to this negative and positive shapes cut from fabric and tissue paper on which marks were made using a Frottage Technique. Once the glue was dry stitching was added into this to highlight areas of the design.  The wire tracings were hand stitched to complete the design.
